Synthesis of lipids by the rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) ovary in vitro

Abstract

Lipogenesis was examined in rainbow trout ovaries by monitoring the in vitro incorporation of [1-14C]acetate into various lipid classes. Label was incorporated primarily into polar lipids in fish with a gonadosomatic index less than 0.15, and primarily into triglycerides in fish undergoing ovarian recrudescence. A substantial proportion of incorporated label was recovered in fatty alcohols, especially in recrudescent fish. The results support the contention that teleost oocytes can synthesize lipids and demonstrates that ovarian lipogenesis can continue well into the "exogenous vitellogenesis" stage of development.
