Effect of Bilateral Adrenalectomy on Production of Restraint Ulcers in the Stomach of Albino Rats

Abstract

To assess the specific role played by adrenals in the production of restraint ulcers in the stomach of albino rats, bilaterally adrenalectomized rats were exposed to stress by a restraint technique and the gastric ulcers that developed were compared with those of adrenal-intact rats under similar conditions.The results show that in vagus-intact, bilaterally adrenalectomized rats, the ulcer index comes down to 0.016 from 0.11 in vagus-intact, adrenal-intact rats. This clearly demonstrates that adrenals play a significant role in the production of restraint ulcers in the gastric mucosa of the albino rats.
