Abstract
A new model for describing the slow movement of natural slopes is proposed. The geological material in the slope is modeled with a nonhomogeneous Bingham constitutive equation. This model describes the effect of gravitational consolidation on the material response and allows for a variation of density and yield stress with depth. A criterion for shear flow initiation is formulated and the ensuing motion is described. Velocity profiles for several slip conditions at the interface with the bedrock are given. The model is used to predict the observed field behavior of a natural slope (Villarbeney, Switzerland).Key words: natural slope, incipient shear flow, nonhomogeneous Bingham law, creep flow, gravitational consolidation.
