Note that while the capacitance C describes the ratio of charge on the capacitor to voltage across it (Ecap(t)), the applied potential E(t) is the potential difference associated with the voltage source. These are equivalent only when the current is zero. In the discussion hereafter, capacitance will be understood to refer to the circuit (and the physical system it represents) as a whole, and so E refers to the applied voltage. As shall be demonstrated, this circuit capacitance equals C at zero current.
