Abstract
A new Fourier transform spectrometer for the ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared regions is described. Based on a Michelson interferometer with a tilted rather than moving mirror, the new spectrometer produces interferograms which are spatial (instead of temporal) intensity patterns and uses photodiode array detection. The primary advantages of the new spectrometer are optical and mechanical simplicity and extremely fast spectral acquisition, as well as large optical throughput. In addition, it is shown that shot noise does not dominate in the recorded interferogram and so Fellgett's advantage applies to the transformed spectrum.
