Abstract
Learning analytics (LA) is a contemporary field of research with advances in machine learning that enables the user to draw conclusions about current teaching and learning based on indicators deduced from historical datasets. The need existed for an understanding of the fundamental grounding principles on which the institutional pedagogy is based. Therefore, the theoretical grounding for the implementation of a virtual learning environment that conforms to good educational practice and can inform a LA reference framework with the aim of identifying at-risk students is established. A gap existed in the institution to implement LA that identify at-risk students. The methodology that was used was a mixed method design science methodology to establish the historical philosophical grounding, linking it to modern teaching practice, establishing best practice through an institutional case study, and defining an appropriate pedagogy. It concludes with a description of a pedagogical model suited to LA, the result of the application of the pedagogy as a case study.
