Abstract
Working virtually can be a lonely experience. Ways to engage employees is so important to uncover especially with so many organizations working virtually. One strategy that the researcher utilized to cultivate engagement was through the use of cohort mentors. This chapter will explore research on mentorship and engagement. The discussion will also present the research that has been done at an online university that embraced engagement through the use of cohort mentors. Doctoral students can benefit extensively from individually administered mentorship programs. This mentorship can be particularly beneficial for doctoral students completing their degrees in the online format. A doctoral cohort mentor model was implemented at the online campus of a mid-sized university in 2019. The model was expanded to include formal advising. Lessons learned and future directions will be discussed.
