Abstract
This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of performance management (PM) within the realm of human resource management (HRM), addressing key topics crucial for understanding its intricacies. It elucidates PM's multifaceted nature and its pivotal role in optimizing organizational performance. The chapter explores the transition from traditional performance appraisal methods to contemporary PM approaches, emphasizing the shift from a retrospective to a forward-looking perspective. It delineates the cyclic process of PM, encompassing goal setting, performance monitoring, feedback, and development planning. Furthermore, the chapter underscores the necessity of PM in fostering employee engagement. Despite its undeniable benefits, PM encounters challenges such as evaluation bias, resistance to change, and technological complexities. Through this chapter, readers gain insights into the dynamic landscape of PM and its practical implications, equipping them with knowledge to navigate its complexities effectively within the HRM domain.
