Abstract
Business process diagrams were introduced a century ago as 'process charts'; since then, they have been an essential part of business process management activities and initiatives. However, with a continually increasing pace of organizational changes, new business and organizational paradigms, and increased automation of processes, some critics argue that process diagrams are no longer a suitable and essential asset for business process analysis, control, and improvement. This chapter analyzes the current problems with process diagrams and presents emerging trends in advanced process diagrams toward digital process shadows and digital twins. In addition, by focusing on challenges such as diagram validity, complexity management, dynamic real-time information, and individual view, solutions to overcome these challenges are visioned by analyzing them as implemented in the domain of navigational maps.
