Abstract
This article describes the characteristics of the speech-language pathologist as counselor and outlines skills that the speech-language pathologist should possess to be an effective counselor with transgender clients. Three counseling approaches are described as they relate to working with transgender clients and the reader is given insight into how to use each approach; the author offers a new approach that is related directly to voice therapy with the transgender client.
