Abstract

Disaster management and the development of awareness are very important in terms of protection from natural disasters. At this point, preventive initiatives are possible with the realization of training and awareness studies. The beginning of education and training activities in childhood is very important for the permanence of education. Childhood and especially pre-school period, children are illiterate; It is known that he realizes the learning process by seeing and imitating. Today, media and internet contents are the guides of children in terms of obtaining information. Based on this principle, in our study on disaster awareness of preschool children, it is aimed to measure the level of knowledge about disasters by using visuals. In order to achieve this goal, pictures of natural disasters were shown to 20 preschool children in a primary school in Iğdır, and it was observed whether they knew about the disaster and how they would react if it did. Children's reactions and attitudes towards what they see were observed. Since there was no direct interview, an ethics committee document was not required. Considering the disasters examined, fire, avalanche, flood, earthquake and landslide were examined as the most common disasters for children. Although the most known disaster is earthquake, it has been revealed that children do not know enough how disasters occur and what to do when they occur.
