Abstract
Abstract
Indian traffic mainly composes of heterogeneous traffic with minimum or no lane discipline, due to this there are various vehicular interactions in the traffic stream. Lateral gap is the lateral distance between two vehicles flowing in the traffic stream. In this paper an attempt is made to analyse the safe gap maintained by the various category of vehicles with respect to their traffic characteristics and how the road width is affected by area occupancy. Methodology for collection of microscopic data is elaborated. Variation in lateral gap is observed due to the speed of adjacent moving vehicles, road width, and composition of vehicle. The relation between flow and area occupancy determines the utilisation of road width on the selected stretch.
