Reexamination of the thermolytic rearrangement of 4-halophenyl azides to 2-aminophenols and other products

4. Diepolder E. (1911) Chem. Ber.44: 2498. A compound melting at 76–77 °C was reported by Meldola et al. [5]. It was claimed that the analysis was done, but it was not reported. The compound was assigned the structure N,O-diacetyl-2-aminophenol·1.5 H2O. It should be noted that N,N,O-triacetylaminophenol (N, 5.96%) and the compound of Meldola et al. [5] (N, 6.36%) are sufficiently close in N content that if N were the only element for which the analysis was made, the error could readily be understood. The compound was obtained by McCasland et al. [6] and was assumed to be the same as that believed by Meldola et al. [5]. Diepolder [4] suspected that the compound of Meldola et al. [5] was the triacetyl derivative and indicated that upon heating N,N,O-triacetyl-2-aminophenol in water one acetyl group is split off from the amino group.
