2. Lanza DC, Kennedy DW: Adult rhinosinusitis defined. Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg 1997, 117:S1-S7. As part of a major effort to codify terminology in CRS, this article provides stay diagnostic and evaluation framework relied on by much of the otolaryngology literature for CRS.

3. Klossek JM, Dubreuil L, Richet H, et al.: Bacteriology of chronic purulent secretions in chronic rhinosinusitis. J Laryngol Otol 1998, 112:1162–1166. Although it was not designed to study the bacteriology of normal patients, this article provides a large control group with microbiology data, against which series of patients with microbiologic analysis CRS can be compared. It highlights the prevelance of organisms in asymptomatic patients.

5. Brook I, Yocum P, Frazier EH: Bacteriology and beta-lactamase activity in acute and chronic maxillary sinusitis. Arch Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg 1996, 122:418–423. This article presents very interesting microbiologic data on the transition from acute to chronic rhinosinusitis, indentifying a switch from common acute pathogens such as S. pneumoniae and H. influenzae to more chronic offenders such as S. aureus.
