BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Pauline Po-Yee LUI is a renowned research in the field of Orthopaedics Sports Medicine, particularly on tendons and ligaments. Her research interest includes tendon stem cells and their niches, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, tendinopathy, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, tendon and ligament healing. She has published over 74 peer-reviewed papers and is the holder of two patents. She is one of the leading scientists in the field of tendon stem cells with many of her work being cited. Her H-index (Google scholar) is 40. Dr. Lui is internationally well-known for her work on tendon-derived stem cells (TDSCs) and tendinopathy. Her group published the first report on the isolation and characterization of tendon-derived stem cells in rat model and named the isolated cells 'TDSCs'. Her group was the first to introduce the concept and demonstrate the erroneous differentiation of TDSCs and mechanical-induced overexpression of chondro-osteogenic bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) as the pathogenic mechanisms of tendinopathy. The findings have laid the foundation for many studies in the field on the etiopathogenesis of tendinopathy. Her group has also successful localized the stem cells in tendon and characterized their niches in situ, which for the first time, has revealed the potential sources, identity and roles of these cells in situ. In this connection, she has obtained many research grants with a total funding of HKD$120.566 million from the University Grant Council and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, among others.
She is the editorial board members of 11 journals as well as reviewers of 62 journals. Because of her expertise in sports medicine, particularly on stem cells and regenerative medicine, as well as tendon and ligament injuries, she is frequently invited as the reviewer of manuscripts and grants on this topic. She is currently the external reviewer of the European Research Council and European Science Foundation. She has been the assessor of the Public Research Funding Scheme, Professional Services Advancement Support Scheme, and Monitoring and Evaluation Study of Kwai Tsing District Health Centre for the Government, Research Impact Fund.
Dr. Lui is committed to serve the community. For instance, she has been the IRB member of CUHK/NTEC (2011-2012).
She is a dedicated educator and has supervised 4 Ph.D. students, 2 M.Phil. students and 10 M.Sc. students. She has been the Deputy Co-Director of M.Sc. / Pg.D. in Sports Medicine and Health Science (2006-2013).
