Abstract

This study is based on the “In the progress of development-oriented ecotourism related to rural settlements whose population is decreasing and aging; detection of local uniqueness (identity) based on socio-cultural data is an important requirement” hypothesis. Rural areas, which form the main resource value of ecotourism with the effect of urbanization in recent years, have various uniqueness with their socio-cultural values, and are strong enough to create opportunities when they are evaluated well with their qualities in rural development. In order for these values to be transformed into opportunities in development, they must be defined and consciously included in decision processes. The aim of the study is to determine the socio-cultural identity at the village scale on the basis of the development of the rural settlements of Kofçaz in Kırklareli, to reveal their local specificities and to ensure their usability for the development of ecotourism. The study method is based on the comparative analysis of the characteristics of socio-cultural identity in the form of maps, tables and graphics, with a participatory method specific to villages, based on literature data, field studies and taking the opinions of local people and relevant stakeholders. In the results of working; in Kofçaz, "ecotourism development zones focused on agriculture, faith, rural life and art" were defined in line with the relevant analyses on socio-cultural values. This will strengthen the evaluation, revitalization and development of rural settlements within a holistic network for ecotourism, specific in Kofçaz.
