Abstract
In 1979 and 1982, papers were presented at ASME Gas Turbine Conferences regarding the new design of Reversible Converter-Coupling (RCC) used in combination with a direct drive clutch, within reduction gearing, to provide a high power reversing gearbox. This paper now reviews reversing gear history and the extensive testing of the RCC. The paper also outlines ship stopping characteristics and gives information regarding the use of the RCC with a direct drive clutch in the Italian Navy ship ‘Giuseppe Garibaldi’.
