Abstract

Distributed energy resources hold great potential for meeting future energy needs. When operated in an optimized combined heat and power (CHP) mode distributed generation (DG) devices provide many operational and economic advantages over conventional energy supply options. This paper presents results of our research which has been focused on intelligent control of energy usage in commercial buildings by utilizing CHP systems. Operation of the CHP system is optimized through applications of Artificial Intelligence and advanced control systems. Energy usage in a commercial building, performance of a CHP system, and desiccant storage are mathematically modeled by using a neuro-fuzzy inference engine. Two commercial buildings are being used as testbeds to identify and analyze the technical issues associated with the deployment and operation of the CHP. Results from the energy control in these buildings are presented in this paper.
