Vibrations of an Inextensible, Air-Inflated, Cylindrical Membrane

Abstract

Two-dimensional vibrations of a long cylindrical membrane are considered. The membrane is attached to a horizontal base along two generators and is inflated with air. It is assumed that the membrane material is inextensible. The weight of the membrane is included in the analysis. First, the equilibrium shape of the cross-section is determined, and then small vibrations about this configuration are studied. It is found that the vibration frequencies decrease as the membrane weight is increased.
