Abstract
A numerical procedure for estimating the heating energy requirements for thermal anti-icing system design and analysis is presented. The leading edge geometry of an airfoil, exposed to atmospheric cloud containing a known sub-cooled water droplet size distribution, is analyzed and the surface temperature distribution required for anti-icing the airfoil surface is presented. The airfoil geometry flow field, computed using a compressible potential flow code, was utilized in the droplet trajectory code to calculate the local water collection efficiency. The collection efficiency and the surface velocity at the boundary layer edge are utilized in the thermal energy transfer rate calculation at the airfoil surface.
