Abstract
Commercially mass produced glass chemical reaction flasks and glass pipe sections have been experimentally evaluated for their adaptability to hydrospace applications. The evaluation concerned itself primarily with their implosion depths and fatigue life, although the effect of different surface finishes, bearing gaskets, and seals on their performance under hydrostatic pressure was also investigated. In addition to the evaluation of commercially available glassware for undersea applications, hydrospace lights and instrument housings have been designed utilizing some of the glass items evaluated in this study. These lights have been experimentally proven to cover the depth range from shallow waters to the greatest ocean depths.
