Abstract
A computational model of the temperature distribution in a hydrogen-cooled, diagonal-flow, gap-pickup generator rotor has been developed. The model will aid in the analysis of the uprate capabilities of turbo-generators during steam turbine upgrades. Under certain operating conditions, knowledge of hot-spot temperatures and the temperature profile in the rotor windings is indispensable in determining the proper rating levels and loading limits. Following a general description of gap-pickup generator rotors and the advantages associated with their use, a description of the methods used in analyzing the hydrogen flow and heat transfer characteristics are presented. The development of the computer model is described with an overview of the design options available. Finally, a sample calculation is presented with an interpretation of the significance of the results.
