Response Bounds for Columns With Transient Loads

Abstract

Explicit bounds are established on the transverse motion of elastic columns with various end conditions loaded with a transient, variable, compressive force. The study is based on Movchan’s stability theorems of continuous systems, which permit the determination of stability directly from the partial differential equations of motion without knowledge of the solution. In two example problems, the bounds are compared with the results of a model analysis via Liapunov’s direct method.
