Abstract
The problem of determining the optimum machining conditions for single-pass and multipass operations has been investigated. An objective function incorporating a combination of the minimum production cost and minimum production time requirements is considered for optimization. The two criteria of production cost and production time are prioritized through their weight coefficients. A constant multiplier is used to normalize the objective function. The optimum machining conditions are then determined by the Nelder-Mead simplex method. Physical constraints regarding the cutting parameters are also considered. The structure of the objective function is analyzed and the procedure to construct it is discussed. The superiority of the combined objective function over the earlier proposed single criteron objective functions, using the production cost, or production time, or maximum rate of profit, is illustrated. A sensitivity analysis for the weight coefficients and the constant multiplier of the objective function are discussed via numerical examples.
