Abstract
A theorem is presented which provides an upper bound on the total inelastic energy dissipated in a structure composed of a creeping plastic material subject to variable load. The result provides a generalization of a theorem of Leckie and Ponter [4, 5] for constant load, and provides an indication of the level of loading at which plastic deformation becomes important.
