Abstract
After a brief survey of the present status of the vast field, a more concentrated review is presented on some issues concerning the foundations of biomechanics. The mechanical properties of living tissues, or their mathematical expressions, i.e., the constitutive equations, are discussed in some detail. Future prospects are considered. The expanding domain of biomechanics is surveyed, and new guideposts — the recently published books, are listed.
