Abstract
Cost considerations are the decisive factor for the market launch of PEFCs. This benchmark comparison first focuses on material costs for the basic chemicals involved in the ionomer syntheses. A new way of generating company-independent cost information on raw chemicals is therefore used. Secondly, an estimate is given of how the complexity of the chemical plant entails additional production costs. This has been done by applying five different approaches developed by process engineers in order to appraise the plants' grass roots investments. Finally, US$∕m2 is a decisive figure for membranes. The values obtained demonstrate the viability of future widespread use.
