Abstract
The diametral compression test is developed as a means of relating abrasive grain fracture characteristics to grinding forces. The effective stress required to fracture a variety of abrasive materials was measured using both static and roll crushing techniques. Grain strength was found to depend strongly on particle size and some shape effects were also observed. The manner in which the grain fractures, as observed from oscillographic force recordings, can be used to characterize the mode of fracture.
