Abstract
Abstract
In this paper we present a utility-based method for selection in engineering design. The Utility-Based Selection DSP supports a designer in making selection decisions involving both tradeoffs among multiple, conflicting attributes and risk or uncertainty associated with these attributes. The method is quantitative as well as axiomatic, designed to facilitate rational decision-making that is consistent with assessed designer preferences. We illustrate use of the Utility-Based Selection DSP through application in a rapid prototyping context. The goal here is to select appropriate rapid prototyping technology and material combinations for testing the snap-fit design of a light switch cover plate. Overall, our focus is to present both method and example in sufficient detail for application by others.
