Abstract
Thermal stresses in a flat plate, a solid and a hollow cylinder are calculated for sudden changes in ambient temperature using analytical solutions. The sudden temperature change from T1 to T2 is approximated by a step change and a linear change. Use of these approximations allows an evaluation of the actual stresses in close limits.
The analytical solutions for transient temperatures and stresses have been made dimensionless in order to gain general information. Thus it became possible to investigate the effect of geometry and wall thickness of a body, heat transfer characteristics and material properties on thermal shock stresses. Charts for quick evaluation of thermal shock stresses are included.
