Abstract
Two ways of nesting are covered: (1) all templates in uniform orientation, and (2) alternate columns of inverted templates. Columns of templates are formed and neighboring columns are meshed together. Then the template is rotated to a new orientation. The optimum packing is obtained by searching through the tightest packing of individual orientations. This method is based on the periodicity of interlocking shapes. The search covers all possible orientations and relationships of one template to another. An interlocking enclosure can be formed around the template by including the gaps. If the enclosure is not detrimental to the design of the template, this new shape is a scrap-free template.
