Abstract

Serum lipoprotein(a) is a genetically determined particle composed of low density lipoprotein (LDL) and apolipoprotein(a). It is considered to be a potential risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis and thrombosis. However, its relationship with type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among coronary artery disease (CAD) subjects is still controversial. Hence the present study aimed to compare Lp(a) distribution among CAD subjects with and without T2DM and also among apparently healthy individuals. The study also aimed in finding relationship between Lp(a) level with severity of CAD among subjects with and without T2DM. Serum Lp(a) level was determined by Immunoterbidimetric assay. Syntax score data was used to know the severity of CAD which was obtained from the cardiology department. SNP rs6415084 analysis has been performed by real time PCR in all the study subjects. CAD subjects with T2DM had higher Lp(a) level and Syntax score when compared to CAD subjects without T2DM. The number of subjects with CT genotype were more compared to CC and TT genotype in the study population with CAD. Significant correlation was observed between serum Lp(a) and Syntax score among CAD subjects without T2DM having CT genotype. The study demonstrated a positive correlation between serum Lp(a) and Syntax score among CAD subjects without T2DM having CT genotype for SNP rs6415084. However, there was no significant correlation observed between serum Lp(a) level and Syntax score among CAD subjects with T2DM with SNP rs6415084.
