Abstract
The chapter addresses the concept of happiness of Abu Nasr Muhammad al-Farabi, the founder of Islamic philosophy, who adopted certain aspects of Greek philosophy and reconsidered the other ones so that they could be applied to the Islamic world. Much has been written about the work of al-Farabi. Most scholars have focused their attention on the virtuous city of al-Farabi and its philosophy of Plato and Aristotle. However, the concept of happiness – the reason and purpose of human existence – has not been given enough attention. The purpose of this chapter is to fill this gap – to dust off al-Farabi's concept of happiness, taking into account the influence of Islam and Greek philosophy on its formation.
