Fire performance of high-strength concrete reinforced with recycled rubber particles

Abstract

An experimental study was carried out to investigate the fire performance of rubber-reinforced high-strength concrete. The compressive strength and flexural strength after different fire temperatures were investigated. The change in colour of a specimen's appearance was observed and the loss of mass was measured. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs of cementation material after fire were taken in order to explain the mechanism of change of the macrostructure of rubber-reinforced high-strength concrete. The research shows that although the strength of rubber-reinforced high-strength concrete drops slightly after high temperature, its spalling resistance performance is improved greatly. Test results show that the low content (1%) of 15-sieve rubber particles can prevent the high-strength concrete from spalling under fire more efficiently than other rubber content and size options.
