Abstract
As an attempt to solve the challenges of the Soviet fast-track industrialisation, full-walled timber shells remain, even today, a daring and unique answer to material shortage. The key role in their development was played by a young research unit – the timber laboratory Department for Timber Structures of the Central Research Institute for Industrial Constructions (SDK CNIPS). Led by the equally young and energetic Genrich Karlsen, the laboratory conceptualised, constructed, tested and improved the structures. Various publications followed, focusing on the load-bearing elements, calculation and construction. Based on three examples, this paper focuses on the development process of one particular type – the full-walled timber barrel shell – covering the purpose, the struggles and the people.
