Abstract
Flax Lane Bridge in Lancashire was reconstructed in 2011 using a proprietary arch bridge system. It won the ICE North-West Region Small Project of the Year Award in February 2012. This paper describes the damage suffered by the original, historic, single span, brick arch structure during the extreme winter of 2009–2010. The renewal options are discussed, together with how early engagement with the contractor allowed confidence in predicted out-turn costs by the use of the chosen system, allowing the most effective option to be identified. Long-term, whole-life maintenance issues are considered along with the ecological and environmental constraints on the project.
