Strategic risks—thinking about them differently

Abstract

This paper reports on the findings of a UK research programme (STRATrisk) sponsored by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the actuarial profession, the Department of Trade and Industry and over 50 leading construction-related companies and organisations. The programme aims to understand and improve board-level decision-making regarding risks and opportunities. New ways of thinking about strategic risks and opportunities are suggested in light of these findings, which in turn provide insights into their identification and management.
