Abstract
A small but significant number suspended-deck coastal structures – including highway bridges, piers, jetties and wharves – have been damaged by sea wave action in recent years, often in milder conditions than those assumed in the design. This paper discusses the forensic investigation of Blankenberge pier in Belgium, which was subjected to unexpected impulsive wave loads after its renovation in 2002. The investigation included field measurements and hydraulic physical model tests to assess wave-loads and optimise alternative mitigation strategies.
