Briefing: Mixed priority route networks, LTN 03/08

Abstract

A series of ten schemes has demonstrated that reducing traffic speeds and providing more efficient parking, better crossing facilities and a more favourable and attractive environment for pedestrians and cyclists have brought about all-round improvements in safety, citizen satisfaction, economic activity, noise and air quality. Common approaches employed in the schemes are: informal crossings on pedestrian desire lines; more informal crossings; reduced vehicle speed through narrower carriageways, horizontal and vertical deflection and careful phasing of traffic signals; better parking and loading arrangements; and reducing clutter. This briefing summarises a Department for Transport publication on this mixed priority route project.
