Abstract
The mechanical behaviour of timber frame shear walls subjected to in-plane forces has been investigated through full-scale tests. Eleven monotonic and 11 cyclic tests were performed on full-scale shear walls, each 2·5 m high by 2·5 m long. Some variables were changed during the tests as follows; different vertical loads were applied, various angle brackets and hold-downs were used, and different sheathing panels were connected to the timber frame. Also, the influence of openings was investigated. Furthermore two walls with non-structural finishing were tested in order to correlate the inter-storey drift with the level of damage. In part 1 of the paper, the test procedure and test results are presented. A detailed discussion of the test apparatus and how the boundary conditions influence the results are also reported. The theoretical approach used to predict the mechanical behaviour of the presented system is explained.
