The Early History of Circular Sliding Surfaces

Abstract

Synopsis The Paper describes the work at Gothenburg leading to the introduction, in 1916, of the use of circular sliding surfaces in the analysis of stability problems in clay. This assumption has become very widely adopted, and the history of its early days is therefore a matter of considerable interest, both to specialists in soil mechanics and to civil engineers generally. Ce document décrit les travax effectués à Gothenburg et qui ont conduit à l'introduction, en 1916, de l'emploi des surfaces de glissements circulaires pour l'analyse des problèmes de la stabilité dans l'argile. Cette hypothèse a été très largement adoptée par la suite et l'historique de ses débuts est done une question du plus grand intérêt à la fois pour les spécialistes de la mécanique du sol et pour les Ingénieurs du Génie Civil en général.
