Abstract
Summary The device described forms a compact and convenient means of determining the thickness of concrete roads and pavements (and of similar rock-like materials) to an accuracy of a few per cent; this can probably be improved upon by refinements discussed. An interesting outcome of the development is that it appears to be possible to measure accurately the velocity of irrotational waves propagating on or just below the surface of the specimen. The paper mentions possible applications to mining, the measurement of Poisson's ratio and crack detection.
