Abstract
A new evolution equation [Formula: see text] for stress in granular materials such as sand is introduced in the frame of rational mechanics. This new approach to constitutive modelling, called ‘barodesy’, is based on the asymptotic behaviour of sand. Despite its mathematical simplicity, barodesy captures many aspects of sand behaviour. The addressed phenomena apply equally to clay, so that an extension to clay is straightforward.
