Assessment method for leaning instability of jackups during preloading in deep soft clay

Abstract

The main codes of practice governing jackup preloading presently mention leaning instability as a potential hazard for jackups, but give little guidance on how to assess it. This paper proposes an explicit calculation, based on concepts that are already used in the literature and codes. Practical application is illustrated by reference to a documented field event.
