Abstract

The current paper deals with the strengthening of large cast iron struts using carbon fibre reinforced polymer composite. It describes the location of the struts in a vent shaft on the London Underground and examines the problems of reinforcing cast iron with conventional materials. A programme of tests on scaled-down struts to demonstrate the benefits of composite strengthening is considered in detail together with a description of the in situ strengthening project.
