The design and construction of a rock slope in weathered slate at Fowey, South-west England

Abstract

Extension of a site on the banks of the River Fowey to accommodate a store for china clay at Fowey, South Cornwall involved excavation of a hillside parallel to the strike of slates dipping at 30–35° towards the river. Local instability of the slope at an early stage of excavation led to redesign of the excavated slope involving geotechnical mapping of the rock face and borehole investigation of conditions behind the face. Measures to ensure the short-term and long-term stability of the excavated slopes included relocation of the clay store, installation of an anchored reinforced concrete retaining wall and the anchoring and draining of the rock face. Design involved estimation of the maximum slopes that it would be advisable to cut in both weathered and sound slate, and assessment of the likely behaviour of the slopes as they were being cut. L'extension d'un chantier sur les rives de la Rivière Fowey pour l'implantation d'une aire de stockage d'argile à porcelaine a Fowey, South Cornwall, a nécessité l'excavation d'un flanc de coteau parallèle à la direction des ardoises s'inclinant de 30° à 35° vers la rivière. L'instabilité locale de la pente au premier stade de l'excavation a entrainé un nouveau calcul de la pente excavée en fonction de la cartographic géotechnique de la surface du rot et des forages derrière cette surface. Les mesures pour assurer la stabilité à court et à long terme des pentes excavées ont inclu la resituation de léaire de stockage l'installation d'un mur de soutènement ancré en béton armé et l'ancrage et le drainage de la surface du roc. Le projet a impliqué l'estimation des pentes maximum permises pour l'excavation de l'ardoise tant altérée que saine, et l‘evaluation du comportement probable des pentes lors de leur excavation.
