Abstract

An experimental investigation was carried out to determine some properties of high-strength flowing concrete (HSFC) reinforced by different percentages of steel fibre (0, 0·25, 0·5, 0·75, 1·0, 1·25, 1·5, 1·75 and 2·0% as volumetric fractions). An experimental programme was planned in which various tests to determine density, compressive strength and flexural strength were conducted to investigate the properties of the concretes in a hardened state. Complete load–deflection curves under static flexural loads were achieved and the flexural toughness indices were determined according to ASTM C1018. The experimental results indicated that the inclusion of this fibre increased the density of the concrete. It can be concluded that the incorporation of 1% steel fibre in the mixed HSFC increased the compressive strength whereas for the flexural strength specimens incorporating 1·5% of steel fibre was found to be the most appropriate. The toughness indices increased as the steel fibre volume fraction increased.
