Abstract
The elastic deformation characteristics of concretes made with thirteen common aggregate types are described. The objective of the investigation was to provide data relating to concrete stiffness, and thereby to assist the engineer in making realistic estimates of the elastic modulus E of concrete. The E values of a variety of rock types were measured; aggregates crushed from these rocks were used to make concrete mixes covering a broad range of strengths and tested for E at ages up to six months. The results clearly demonstrate the powerful influence of aggregate type on E. Guidance is given on estimating the E of concrete, and a modification of the BS 8110 approach is suggested.
