Optical and morphological studies of 3-methyl-2,6-diphenylpiperidinium picrate

Abstract

Single crystals of 3-methyl-2,6-diphenylpiperidinium picrate, a proton-transfer complex, are grown from ethanol–chloroform (2:1, v/v) at room temperature by slow evaporation. The vibrational patterns, as measured by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, show the formation of complexes. The crystal exhibits good transmittance in the visible region, and the lower optical cutoff wavelength is ∼495 nm. The structure and the crystallinity of the material were further confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction analysis. The scanning electron microscopy study indicated defect-centered surface morphology. Second-harmonic generation efficiency was estimated by the Kurtz and Perry powder method. Thermal analysis by thermogravimetry/differential thermal analysis shows the stability of the material.
