Abstract

The Eurocodes for composite structures for buildings and bridges (Eurocode 4 parts 1-1 and 2) are being revised to take account of users' experience, developments in practice and research over the last 20 years. Extensive comments have been received from working groups set up by the European Committee for Standardisation, from committees of national standards bodies and from individuals. There is wide support for three inconsistent policies: that the codes should retain their current material, should be shorter and should include much new material. This paper provides an overview of comments received and recent information from research. Priorities for inclusion in Eurocode 4 are discussed. Additions requested include rules for the use of stronger materials and widening of the scope of current clauses. Examples are connectors other than studs, beams with large holes in webs, double composite action and bridge decks curved in plan. However, much of this new material will inevitably be omitted. Its value to industry would be enhanced if it could be shown to be authoritative and consistent with the revised Eurocodes. This could be done outside the Eurocode system, and designers would then use it.
